Hemp vs CBD oil
Hemp Seed Oil vs. CBD Oil
While Hemp Seed Oil and CBD Oil are similar in many ways, there are also significant differences between the two. So, how exactly does Hemp Seed Oil differ from CBD Oil? Patients often confuse Hemp Seed Oil with CBD Oil because both are low in THC. However, beyond that, there is so much more to each Oil. Today, the retail Hemp Seed and CBD markets continue to grow at an incredible rate. So, it’s crucial that patients understand the difference between Hemp Seed Oil and CBD Oil.
Can Hemp Seed or CBD Oil get you high?
Neither Hemp Seed nor CBD Oil can get you high. First, when it comes to Hemp Seed Oil, there is no way it could ever make you high because the hemp seed does not contain enough THC. While Cannabis Oils generally contain high amounts of THC, Hemp Seed Oil only contains about .05-1% THC. THC is found concentrated in the buds of the cannabis plant. But, because industrial Hemp is grown for its stalks, the THC has been bred out of these plants.
CBD is just one compound out of about 80 active chemicals in the Cannabis plant. Unlike THC, the psychoactive cannabinoid, CBD Oil is non-psychoactive. Medical Cannabis is grown specifically for its high concentration of THC, but Hemp is bred to contain the lowest levels of THC. So, when you buy CBD or Hemp Oil rather than Oil made from Medical Cannabis, you are getting oil high in CBD with practically no THC.
Extraction Methods
Hemp Seed Oil is extracted by pressing the raw hemp seeds from the Cannabis Sativa or Hemp plant. While all of the species of Cannabis plants can produce seed oil, generally only industrial Hemp is used to make Hemp seed oil. Cold pressed, unrefined Hemp Seed Oil has a rich, nutty flavor and green tint. But once refined, Hemp Seed Oil becomes colorless and relatively flavorless.
CBD is one of over 80 chemical substances known as cannabinoids, which are all found in the cannabis plant. It’s the second most abundant compound in Hemp and typically represents up to 40% of its extracts. CBD can be extracted in three ways: C02 method, ethanol method, or oil method.
C02 method extracts CBD oil in its purest form by pushing C02 through the plant at high pressures and low temperatures to remove substances like chlorophyll, leaving behind no residue. CBD oil that is extracted by this method has a cleaner taste. The ethanol method extracts CBD oil using high-grain alcohol. However, this method tends to destroy some of the beneficial natural oils. Finally, the Oil method involves extraction using a carrier oil such as olive oil or coconut oil. The technique is increasingly popular thanks to the added nutritional benefits in the oil used and because it is safe and free of residues.
Hemp Seed Oil Uses Compared to CBD Oil
Hemp Seed Oil supplies many nutrients that help prevent many common diseases. Hemp seed oil is nature’s most perfectly balanced oil thanks to the high content of essential fatty acids, which provide nutritional advantages over other vegetable oils. The oil contained in the Hemp seed is 75-80% polyunsaturated fatty acids (the good fats your body needs). It also contains smaller amounts of gamma-linolenic acid, oleic acid, and stearidonic acid. Hemp Seed Oil contains a 3:1 ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 essential fatty acids. This essential fatty acid combo is unique among edible oilseeds.
When Hemp Seed Oil is refined, it can be used for various facial and body care products, including cosmetics, lotions, lubricants, ointments, soap, shampoo, and much more. Unrefined, Industrial Hemp seed oil can also be used in several industrial products like lubricants, paints, inks, plastics, detergents and even biodiesel.
Hemp Oil Also Contains CBD
Meanwhile, CBD Oil grows more popular each day as a supplement and as an alternative remedy for several ailments. CBD Oil has a sedative quality, which is what most people look for when choosing this oil medicinally. However, studies suggest that CBD oil helps prevent inflammation and nausea, diabetes, alcoholism, PTSD, schizophrenia, rheumatoid arthritis, epilepsy, and many other ailments traditionally harder to treat with pharmaceutical medicine.
CBD Oils derived from Hemp vs. CBD Oils derived from Cannabis Flowers
In the plant world, Cannabis and Hemp are cousins, which leave patients often scratching their head when it comes to the differences between oils. Theirs is so much debate over CBD oils derived from Hemp and CBD Oils derived from Cannabis flowers. However, the main difference between Cannabis and Hemp is that the THC levels in Hemp are much lower, and the CBD levels are naturally higher.
That’s not to say that all Hemp Oil is created equally. With the unique strains of Cannabis that have been designed to be incredibly potent in CBD and contain virtually no THC, some Hemp Oils have technically fallen into the industrial hemp category due to the levels of THC and CBD defining them, as laid out by the North American Industrial Hemp Council, Inc.
The bottom line: Both Hemp Oil and CBD Oil have become extremely popular in treating various ailments and conditions without the typical intoxicating effects of Cannabis. However, in states and countries where CBD extracted from Cannabis is illegal, CBD derived from Hemp Oil is not.
